2000 ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES

November 4, 2000



The Annual Meeting of the Bermuda Beach Property Improvement Committee was called to order by President Carroll Cobb at 10:00 AM on November 4, 2000. Introduction of Officers followed. An introduction and thank you was also extended to Carroll Gilliam for taking the minutes of this year's meeting and to Leonard Tatar, for taking charge of the nominations and election for this years board.

Speaker of the day, Councilwoman Dianna Puccitti addressed the audience on the city's next and largest project, which is the beach re-nourishment program for the West End of the island. Bermuda Beach has been identified as the most critical area and shall be the first to receive the benefits of the city's labor. Meetings are now underway with this goal as the focus.

Councilwoman Puccitti also advised the group about the new water tower that will service our area has been completed and new pipe to supply that water is currently being installed. This entire project is scheduled to be completed by March 2001. Bermuda Beach will receive improved water quality and water pressure from this new facility.

Al Birdwell broached the subject of police protection or rather, the lack of, and announced that this is one of the priorities of the West End group.

Al Birdwell moved to accept the minutes of the last Annual Meeting as distributed. The motion passed.

The Treasure's Report was submitted in writing to all present. (This report had also been submitted to all property owners by mail in the October newsletter.) Questions from the floor were answered. David Walker moved that the financial report be accepted as distributed. The motion carried.

Mildred Coker reported on the completion and success of the sewer project and the resurfacing of all roads. The city will now enforce the obligation of each property owner to connect immediately.

President Carroll Cobb reported on the progress of the beach renourishment program. A copy of the enclosed newspaper article was distributed with the meeting handouts and will outline the jest of the project. The city is now taking the initiative, and because of this, FEMA funds may become available to us for any later replacement. The city has no funds; thus the BBIC has provided funding that is matched by (CEPRA) Coastal Erosion Response Protection Act 3, three dollars for every one advanced. The goal of $50,000 then became $200,000 for the project. The exact usage of brought in sand and the rebuilding of dunes is under study by the firm of Shiner & Mosley. Questions, answers, concerns and suggestions were discussed.

Al Birdwell reported on the current negotiations between the city and the GLO with regard to issuing permits to home owners on the front row in regard to repairs and rebuilding the beach front properties. Hopefully this issue will be settled in the near future.

A question was asked about scraping the seaweed up to the vegetation line as we did during the regular "seaweed" season this year. It was explain that TAMUG's DR. Jim Webb suggested this as a compromise.

New Business

John Merchant moved that we create a "Yard of the Quarter" award to encourage residents to get involved with the beautification of Bermuda Beach as a whole and enhance their own properties. The motion passed. Madam President appointed Mr. Merchant Committee Chairman and announced that by default his wife Jean should also serve on the committee.

Mr. Leonard Tatar presented the report of the nominating committee. Mr. Tatar also read the criteria for his selecting the nominees and requested that a new nominating committee be formed and work throughout the year. The motion passed. Carroll Cobb appointed Leonard Tatar as the committee chairman, and asked that Roger Gilliam, Joyce Marchi, and Beverly Twaddell serve with Mr. Tatar. (Criteria as read by Mr. Tatar is attached)

The slate for this year's election consisted of Al Birdwell, Carroll Cobb, Mildred Coker, Kathy Love, and Joe Taylor. Nominations from floor were requested and being none received a motion was made that the slate be accepted by acclamation. The motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned to the covered dish picnic at the home of Carroll Cobb and John Pfeiffer.
