communities have their
share of "wildlife". Usually these animals take care
of themselves but occasionally you may run across a wounded animal.
Dolphins and sea turtles become stranded on the beach. Dead or
alive, it is very important to report any kind of stranding to
the Marine Mammal Stranding Network. And telephone the local police.
With all the "free" food on the beach the community also hosts many other critters. Feral cats, raccoons and possums are the most common. These animals serve a great need in a coastal community. All eat dead fish and things that wash up on the beach. This is natures way of keeping it in a clean and tidy condition. Another favorite treat for these feral mammals is snake. Yum! The more they eat the less we have to worry about meeting one! Please let the wildlife live in peace. If you would like to help, leave out a dish of clean fresh water. This is something that is usually in short supply on a salty and sandy beach. That also assures you that they will be hunting their favorite treats of mice and snakes, keeping your property clean of rodents and other varmints less easily controlled. If you find an injured animal, telephone one of the wildlife rehabilitators or the local police. If in doubt about what to do, telephone BBIC Board Member Kathy Love for suggestions on how to handle your animal emergency.
